Villa Emma is build in 1909 In those days, Villa Emma was surrounded by fields – as more this was Oostakker – The owner who realized it, created it as a summer house Builder of the house was the family Berben-De Bruille and the name of the lady was Emma, witch is the reason why there is “Villa Emma”. The architect, Mr Rooms, designed a building based on the English Cottage style with some Art Nouveau elements. Typical for the cottage style is the combination of bricks, freestone and wood. You can find the wooden structures in the tower and in the part beside it We bought Villa Emma in 1996 and fell in love with it when we entered the living room. There are a lot of glass structures and the contrast with our previous house was quite big. We have 3 children, 3 boys. On a certain moment in live, children are leaving … and the house became a bit big for 2 people … As more, the second floor became totally empty … so we decided to give it a new life as a Bed&Breakfast. Also because we like meeting people … We have adapted Villa Emma a little bit at the today comfort level. This “comfort” level was especially the heating system. When we arrived, parts of the house were impossible to warm up. But we always renovated in full respect with the building it-selves. We wanted to keep the Villa in his original appearance. Some time ago, we found a photo of the early villa. You can see the very young little trees who meanwhile became 100 years older. We have chestnut, black nut, oak, maple, sycamore, … In front of the house, we have a marvelous concrete pont, stil original. When we arrived, we gave hem a more “natural” look. The pont has been emptied only one time in order to make him waterproof, some years ago. When you let the pont being “a pont”, a natural balance is created wich guarantees a nice ecosystem When we arrived here in 1996 – a long time ago meanwhile – somewhere in August ..no, July. The sun was shining, it was summer. It looked like we came on holiday and that feeling is still part of us. However, living in this place – leaving in the morning for work, coming home in the evening, it becomes so trivial …. After all, it is a place to live, to eat, to sleep …. And in fact, since we have the B&B we feel again Villa Emma is a lovely place to live !
